Special Guest: George Cuellar
On our recent Fuel Radio podcast, we had the privilege of hosting George Cuellar, a former veterinarian who transitioned into the world of leadership coaching. It wasn't a career change he saw coming. After dedicating four decades to veterinary medicine, a surprising opportunity led him to take the reins on the leadership sector of a startup. Inspired by Peter Senge's "The Fifth Discipline Field Book", George found resonance with its principles, especially "systems thinking" and "personal mastery".
The "Fifth Discipline" breaks down into five main components: Systems Thinking, Personal Mastery, Mental Models, Shared Vision, and Team Learning. Of these, Personal Mastery stood out for George. It emphasizes knowing oneself deeply before understanding others or anything else. Personal mastery probes questions like, "Who am I?", "What's my mission?", and "What's my purpose?" – a topic George has been passionately learning and applying in his own life and business for the past 25 years.
Discussing "mental models", George brings up the concept of culture within a business, emphasizing the need to understand, break down, and reshape it. But the pinnacle for any leader is sharing a vision, creating accountability, and fostering team learning.
In a twist to his journey, George encountered the Enneagram, a tool that drastically changed his self-perception and understanding of others. His intrigue led him to hire a coach specializing in the Enneagram. This venture into the world of coaching was new to him. However, after seeing the profound impact on his personal growth and the dynamics within his business team, he decided to pursue coaching professionally.
George's coaching philosophy centers around genuine listening. He believes most of us have been trained to speak but not truly listen. His approach to coaching is built on trust, safety, confidentiality, and holding his clients as naturally creative, resourceful, and whole. He finds profound joy and purpose in witnessing the transformative journey of his clients.
Closing our conversation, we touched on the parallels between coaching in business and sports. It's not just about the numbers or tactics; it's about motivation, mutual respect, and deep care.
For those stepping into entrepreneurship, George's journey is a testament to the power of adaptability, continuous learning, and genuine connection. Dive into the full podcast to get the complete scoop!
